My goal with almost all of my work is to paint the light on the landscape, rather than simply painting the things in the landscape. Since the light was so dramatic and spectacular at this moment in time, I kept reminding myself of that goal especially for this particular piece. Creating the illusion of the landscape details, rather than rendering the specifics of those details, was key here.
