The Long Night
This was painted from a small sketch done on location at nearly 9000 feet in the Rockies along Independence pass at night. I was staying by myself in one of my favorite spots and went out for a cigar during an intense snowfall in late March and caught this magnificent scene. The flag is barely visible shrouded in darkness and yet there is still a sense of hope to it. This was painted in several layers, the blacks were achieved through 2 glazes to create a real sense of depth in person.
